New Delhi: During the Rajya Sabha session on Friday, Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan humorously introduced herself as ‘Jaya Amitabh Bachchan,’ prompting a hearty laugh from Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar.
Bachchan, who had previously expressed her discomfort with being addressed by her husband’s name, playfully used it during the session, leading Dhankhar to burst into laughter.

Jaya Bachchan’s statement sparked a light-hearted exchange between Bachchan and Dhankhar. Bachchan teased, “Did you get a lunch break today? No? That’s why you’re mentioning Jairam Ji’s name so often. It seems you can’t digest your food without saying his name.”
Dhankhar responded, “I’ll share a light-hearted note. I didn’t take a lunch break today, but I did have lunch with Jairam Ji,” which only added to the amusement. He added, “I must confess, this might be the first time I’m a fan of both you and Amitabh Ji.”
This cheerful moment followed Bachchan’s earlier objection to being addressed as “Jaya Amitabh Bachchan” by Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh.
On July 29, Bachchan had firmly stated, “Sir, just Jaya Bachchan would have sufficed,” emphasizing her concern about women being identified solely by their husband’s names. She had remarked, “It’s surprising that women are recognized by their husbands’ names as if they have no identity or achievements of their own.”
Jaya Bachchan has been married to megastar Amitabh Bachchan since June 3, 1973. The couple has acted together in several iconic films, including ‘Zanjeer,’ ‘Sholay,’ ‘Abhimaan,’ ‘Mili,’ ‘Chupke Chupke,’ ‘Silsila,’ and ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.’ Since her political debut in 2004, she has been a staunch advocate for women’s rights and various social issues.
