Kolkata Rains LIVE: Heavy Downpour Causes Waterlogging In Several Areas
Kolkata rains LIVE: Ankle-deep water was reported in some areas of central and south Kolkata, but traffic movement remained unaffected, said police.
Kolkata: Heavy rains battered Kolkata and surrounding districts on Saturday after a low-pressure area intensified into a deep depression. The downpour led to significant waterlogging across various parts of Kolkata, with similar conditions reported in neighboring cities such as Howrah, Salt Lake, and Barrackpore. The situation would remain the same throughout the day, the weather office said.
Ankle-deep water was reported in some areas of central and south Kolkata, but traffic movement remained unaffected, said police.
A weather official reported that the city received up to 7 cm of rainfall since Friday afternoon. "The low pressure over Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal turned into a deep depression. It is gradually shifting towards Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. This, accompanied by an active monsoon trough over the southern districts of West Bengal, resulted in the rains," he said.
The southern districts of Howrah, Paschim Bardhaman, Birbhum, Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly, Nadia, and North and South 24 Parganas districts will continue to experience showers over the next 12 hours, he said.
The Met Department has issued a warning for thunderstorms with lightning. A 'yellow' alert has been issued for Gangetic West Bengal, including Kolkata, forecasting heavy rain of up to 11 cm. An 'orange' alert for heavy to very heavy rain is in effect for Purulia, Murshidabad, Malda, Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, and Kalimpong districts.
A 'red' alert has been issued for the Alipurduar district, where rainfall of up to 20 cm is expected. On Friday, Kolkata recorded a maximum temperature of 30.1°C, which was 2.4°C below normal, while the minimum temperature was 26°C, 0.6°C below normal.
