Menstruation, the monthly shedding of the uterine lining, typically lasts three to seven days and comes with various symptoms. Alongside common issues like cramps, breast tenderness, bloating, and mood swings, many women experience night sweats during their periods.
What causes night sweats during periods
Hormonal fluctuations: The menstrual cycle involves shifts in estrogen and progesterone levels, which can disrupt the body's temperature regulation, leading to night sweats.
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS): For some women, night sweats are a symptom of PMS, occurring in the days leading up to and during menstruation.
Menopause transition: Women in their late 40s or early 50s may experience night sweats as part of perimenopause or menopause, marked by a significant decline in estrogen levels.
Primary ovarian insufficiency (POI): POI, where the ovaries cease functioning normally before age 40, can cause symptoms such as night sweats, hot flashes, and painful sex.
Infections: Illnesses coinciding with menstruation can cause fevers, leading to increased night time sweating.
Hyperthyroidism: An overactive thyroid gland, which produces excess thyroid hormone, can result in generalized sweating, including at night.
Is this a normal experience?
Experts affirm that night sweats during menstruation are a common experience for many women. Though not universal, this symptom is a typical response to hormonal changes.

Managing night sweats
Cool Sleeping Environment: Use a fan or air conditioning and opt for light, breathable bedding. A cool shower before bed can also help reduce body temperature.

Breathable fabrics
Choose sleepwear made of breathable materials like cotton and avoid synthetic fabrics that trap heat. Loose-fitting clothes allow better air circulation around the body.
Ice pack under one's pillow
Use a soft gel ice pack to help you in managing night sweats. All you have to do is keep it under your pillow before sleeping. This can help cool your sleeping environment, and when you wake up in the middle of the night, you can flip your pillow over. This will help to cool off your face.
