Sarfira Director Sudha Kongara Calls Herself 'Ignorant' For Confusing Two Indian Revolutionaries

Sudha Kongara took to her X (formerly Twitter) to retract her statement made recently regarding Veer Savarkar. The filmmaker, who last worked with Akshay Kumar in Sarfira, shared that she made the statement in jest without fact-checking it first. The director also assured her fans that she would refrain from giving interviews in the future without having thorough knowledge about the subject.

What did Sudha Kongara say that led to controversy?

In a recent interview, the Sarfira director talked about women's education. She hailed Veer Savarkar as a pioneer in the movement and for reforming the mindsets. She argued that he supported his wife in her quest to complete her education even when their entire village stood against them.

Her statements received major flak from social media users for confusing Savarkar with Phulbe. They fact-checked Sudha and asserted that it was in fact Jyotiba Phule who had supported his wife Savitribai Phule in her quest for education and thus making history.

Sudha Kongara retracts her statement

On July 27, Sudha Kongara took to her X (formerly Twitter) account to issue an apology for her statements. She admitted to being wrong and recalled hearing the anecdote when she was all of 17 which created the confusion.

Sudha Kongara, in her post, wrote, “I apologise . For my ignorance . At seventeen when I was just led into the world of women’s studies and I heard this anecdote from my teacher, I didn’t fact check . I should have . As a student of History and rigorous research I should have delved deeper. Thus, my interview was born out of sheer ignorance and no mal-intent ever, to apportion credit for one’s achievements elsewhere." She added, “ I promise to not give interviews anymore without checking my facts . I thank everyone who corrected me. Jyotiba and Savitribai Phule - forever respect. #VivalaRevolucion!"
